Last two years has seen an increased number of conferences and workshops on earthquake risk mitigation and this has resulted in valued interaction amongst members of the scientific/engineering community specializing in earthquake related issues. Most of these formal gatherings have aimed at better understanding of earthquake effects on the built environment and the mitigation techniques that need to be adopted.

The engineering fraternity has been unanimous in identifying the building category which is considered the most vulnerable amongst all of the engineered buildings in our country today - ‘Buildings on Stilts’. A simpler explanation would be buildings that have an open ground floor area and which on most occasions are used as car park.

Constructing multi storey buildings with open ground floor is a common practice in all cities as the ground floor car park area is not counted in the building FAR/FSI by the municipality while sanctioning the plans.

If not all majority of the buildings on stilts will collapse in the event of a major quake whether it is zone 3, 4 or 5. To make matters worse all of these buildings are multi storey and hence the casualty rate would be much higher when compared to a low rise building.

The fatal casualties due to collapse of this single building type would be in thousands. What happened to buildings in Ahmedabad when an earthquake struck Bhuj is a live testimony.

One may ask is the Government aware of this grave problem and if so what’s it doing about it? However the answer is not as simple as even though the Government is fully conversant with the problem the Frankenstein has become so large that most feel it is an issue easier brushed under the carpet rather than have to deal with it.

The irony of the matter is that even though we are not ready to deal with this issue which has the potential of becoming a nightmare just yet, with each passing day it keeps getting bigger as more of the similar unsafe building stock is getting added to our cities.

The problem isn’t insurmountable if one has the resolve and approaches it in a systematic and time bound manner. To start with the Government will have to generate awareness amongst the masses through print and electronic media that all buildings on stilts be prima-fascia considered unsafe until a safety certificate is issued by a structural consultant. In most Indian cities multistory buildings are constructed and continue to be constructed on 9 to 12 inch thick columns which are highly inadequate even by Zone 3 standards. These buildings will come crashing down in the event of a major quake.

The Government should then ensure that the owners/occupants are guided to having a structural audit done for their building so as to positively identify those at risk that will need structural retrofit to upgrade.

Based on the computer analysis the engineer can recommend a retrofit methodology which can then be handed over to the owners of the building for implementation. Once this process is completed the responsibility of making the building safe should rest with the owners. As an incentive the Government can evaluate the possibility of tax incentives on the amount spent on retrofit.

In these hard economic times business is very hard. If you are a company director looking for a bit of advice because your architect business is struggling, you have come to the right place. I have created many articles which try to help a director take the right steps in either closing his business or pre-packing a sale and starting again.

Firstly if your architect company is insolvent you have a duty as a director to close the company and not incur any further debt, unless you can be pretty sure that you can put in place a rescue plan to turn that business around. If you can’t them you need to liquidate the company yourself or take professional advice on how best to close the business in an orderly fashion.

By far the most popular choice is to engage an insolvency practitioner to call a meeting of creditors on your behalf, prepare the statement of affairs, hold the meeting and then deal with all the procedural aspects necessary to make sure all creditors now what is going on and how they can participate in any dividend.

There is a fee for all this and generally it will be about £5000 whoever you use around the country. There are some advertisements for liquidations at less than this but by the time all costs are accounted for, it will still come in at about the same sum.

However, it was only in the twentieth century that architects were required to pass tests and be licensed. Today, the word “architect” refers to a licensed professional.

It is advisable to begin early if you are interested in a career as an architect. You can start by learning to observe buildings, spaces and their relationships. Be more sensitive to the effect of texture, color, shape and light. Try to feel the spaces and places when you are in particular buildings. Look for rhythm and pattern, simplicity and ornament, old and new in your own environment such as your home, school and community. At the same time, you can analyse and think about the design values expressed in such environment.

To develop your interest in architecture, do not hesitate to visit the design studios of architecture school. Participate in their summer program to get deep insight of architecture course might helps too. Besides, take changes to tour the offices of a local architecture firm to gain a broad understanding of the nature of an architect’s work and the values of the profession. Talk to the architects, they are far more than happy to share their experience and knowledge with you. Read as many books and magazines as possible on architecture to witness the latest architectural design trend to date.

In the US, you must meet three requirements to become a licensed architect, education, experience and professional exam. First, you must earn a professional degree in architecture from an accredited higher-education architecture program. After graduation, you will need to complete a period of practical training or internship by working under the supervision of a licensed architect. Then only you are qualified to take the nine-part Architect Registration Exam (ARE). Upon passing all divisions of the ARE, you are officially a “licensed” architect to provide architectural services. The entire path could easily take you eight to ten years to complete.

What makes the profession worth practising? Problem-solving, decision-making, team leadership and creativity are key elements in making architecture. For architect, such intellectual stimulation and technical challenges lead to the tremendous excitement that comes from seeing a design idea become a physical reality. So you are dreaming to be an aspiring Architect or as George Constanza would, “you know I always wanted to pretend to be architect!”. Ok I had to work in some Seinfeld reference today so there it is. But lets not pretend here, lets talk about fact. You are an aspiring architect, and what better way to jump into the profession then learning more about it.

If the path you want to pursure is being an innovator in the architecture industry then look no further than Great Schools by Design, a program administered by the American Architectural Foundation (AAF) and sponsored by the architectural company Target. This program allows students to get involved in designing schools and matches school leaders with architectural innovators.

But maybe you are already a young architect and want to stir up some creative thoughts about new designs, maybe a better design of an already existing facility. Willard Daggett, president of the International Center for Leadership in Education, suggests, “technology is an important foundation for building.” He continues, “sustainability issues should be considered when building a design and that the design should have an artistic consideration.”

So where can an architect or aspiring architect go for more information besides the web? The 2007 American Institute of Architects (AIA) New York Chapter Design Awards will be held on April 9 to July 7 in New York City as well as the AIA National 150 Best Buildings Exhibition Opening is on April 11 in Washington, D.C. and of course The Snapshot 007: Current Houston Design on View will be held on May 18 to June 16 in Houston, Texas. Three great shows and venues for aspiring architects to gain some knowledge and inspriation.

As with an goal achievment process or career path succession, one should always have a mentor or someone in the industry they can look up to and learn from. Architecture is no different. Architect Steven Ehrlich, is a good place to start. It has been his principle in designing which has made him well known and successful in the architecture profession. His resume includes designing the eco-conscious building in Zaria, Nigeria with a mud and thatch experimental theater. This structure is still maintained and due to its cultural relevance it was described as a reflection of a singular multicultural modernism. Ehrlich states, “that latest technology in architecture allows architects to be environmentally responsible.”

Or you can look to Eddie Jones, another successful and brilliant architect. Jones has designed buildings for the state of Arizona. He tends to use the element of surprise in his work, where inside his architecture, “unexpected ways of letting the sun and moon enhance the experience of a space abound,” claims an unnamed source. Eddie Jones runs the Jones Studio Inc. with his brother, and he continues to “benefit creatively from what surrounds him naturally,” according to Architecure Digest.

So as you can see the profession of architecture is a challenging one, yet there are many avenues you take as well as groups, people and exhibits you can draw inspiration from to enhance your career.

How do you take apart patio block wall, put up with construction adhesive made for concrete block.?
just put up a concrete block wall and made mistake at end. The angle is wrong and will not meet up with a column that I will eventually put at the end of the wall. Can I take the blocks apart with out damaging the blocks so I can reassemble correctly? They’ve been glued together for about a week. Can they be pryed apart? Help!
